The Association for the Public Defender of Maryland (APDM) proudly hosted the annual JuvRA Homecoming Picnic—a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the growing community of individuals released under Maryland’s Juvenile Restoration Act (JuvRA).
The event brought together returning citizens, their families, public defenders, legislators, advocates, and allies to honor the journeys of those who were sentenced as children and given a second chance at life outside of prison. It underscored how policy change can create real pathways home for those serving long sentences.
Throughout the afternoon, attendees shared personal stories of release and reflected on their experiences coming home. Conversations naturally turned to the Second Look Act, sparking celebrations about its potential to create more opportunities for release and build on the progress of JuvRA.
From shared meals to shared stories, the picnic created space for reconnection, healing, and joy. We’re grateful to everyone who joined us and look forward to continuing this work—together.
