The past year has been transformative for our youth intervention program in Prince George's County, now renamed the Uplifting Youth Project. This initiative, in collaboration with CareFirst and the Office of the Public Defender (OPD), has continued to bridge the gap between legal advocacy and mental health support for justice-involved youth in Prince George’s County. Through screening, assessment, planning, ongoing support, and referrals to mental health treatment and community-based services, we have helped create a path forward for some young individuals navigating the justice system.
A Year of Meaningful Impact
In this past year alone, the Uplifting Youth Project has served more than 35 clients, providing them with the full range of services offered by our program. Our work has become an integral part of the Youthful Defender Division in Prince George’s County, reinforcing the importance of mental health and community-based support in the legal process.
The Critical Role of Mental Health + Substance Abuse Treatment
Justice-involved youth often face significant mental health and emotional challenges, and our program ensures they receive the support they need to overcome these obstacles. The Uplifting Youth Project provides a vital bridge to community-based resources addressing the full range of needs and concerns -- from therapy and counseling to educational opportunities and family assistance. The team creates a comprehensive support system designed to foster resilience and rehabilitation.
Meet the Dedicated Professionals Making a Difference
The success of this program would not be possible without the dedication of two remarkable professionals whose commitment and expertise drive meaningful change: Johnay Kibler and Karen Rovira. As the licensed social worker on the team, Johnay plays a critical role in screening clients and connecting youth with essential resources. Karen Rovira, our dedicated case manager, works closely with clients to ensure these young individuals have access to a wide range of critical services.
A Collaborative Effort for Lasting Change
The Uplifting Youth Project remains committed to expanding its impact, strengthening its partnerships, and continuing to serve as a vital resource for the court-involved youth of Prince George’s County. We look forward to another year of growth, advocacy, and meaningful change.
